Since 2014, ISSP has been working to develop a certification process for sustainability professionals in order to:

  • Bring cohesion and definition to the emerging profession of sustainability
  • Provide credibility for employers and assurance of a standard level of competency of the sustainability professional
  • Impart practitioners in the field evidence of competency, furthering their credibility, influence and career advancement opportunities
  • Provide clear guidance and direction to educators and organizations creating sustainability courses, training programs and ongoing professional development opportunities for sustainability practitioners

The Sustainability Professional Certification program is being developed in accordance with the internationally recognized ISO 17024 standard. This is to ensure that the ISSP Certification will provide a global benchmark for sustainability professionals, providing industry-recognized credentials that can be carried across national borders.

With the input of ISSP members, we have developed the program’s criteria for eligibility and the test and process for evaluating applicants. Between the summer of 2015 and the spring of 2016, we conducted several Betas of two certification levels - the ISSP-SA and ISSP-CSP - which resulted in the first cohort of ISSP Certified Sustainability Professionals. The official launch of ISSP’s Sustainability Professional Certification Program will take place in 2016. You can read more about the history of ISSP’s Certification Program here.

We welcome the input of all sustainability professionals and sustainability-related organizations as we work to make Certification a reality.
