The 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into effect on January 1st, 2016. This historic agreement had its origins in the Millennium Development Goals and represents a commitment by all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. The SDGs are a non-binding agreement but Governments are expected to create a national framework to work toward these goals as well as providing the mechanisms to measure and report their progress (United Nations, 2017).
