WEBINAR RECORDING: Sustainability Policy: Hastening the Transition to a Cleaner Economy
Learn how federal, state, and local policies can be effective tools for making our economy cleaner and more sustainable in this upcoming webinar aimed at public sector professionals and those new to sustainability policy.
Recorded live on Thursday July 16, 2015 at 11:00 am PT / 2:00 pm ET
One of the most effective ways to hasten our transition to a cleaner, more sustainable economy is through public policy - at the federal, state, and local levels. Water, energy, material use, and waste management are all shaped by policy and political discourse. ISSP’s upcoming webinar will provide an introduction to sustainability and policy professionals on how to navigate the public sector’s complex and critical role in the sustainability movement, including the importance of local action and standardized monitoring and measurement.
Led by Dr. Steven Cohen, Executive Director of Columbia University's Earth Institute, this webinar will avoid isolating private sector changes from traditional public sector environmental law, and will instead provide a unique opportunity to discover how public policy directly affects the free market economy. And, rather than focusing on the government’s role in traditional views of conservation and environmentalism, the workshop will reveal new and creative measures that are poised to expand as the future of sustainability policy unfolds.
Learning outcomes include:
- Understand sustainability in public and private enterprises, including the role of government and public policy
- Learn the current standing federal, state, and local policies surrounding sustainability
- Discover what makes an effective sustainability policy, including measurement and evaluation metrics
- Explore the politics and future of sustainability, and the barriers to change
Existing work in this field primarily focuses on corporate sustainability without the framework of public sector interaction or influence. Or, it concentrates on the public sector and the environment in the context primarily of traditional environmental policies and regulation. This will be a unique presentation of the intersection of public and private sectors as it relates to sustainability and the increasing utilization of sustainability practices across the economy. The presentation will focus its examination on feasible policy levers that might be less flashy or may attract less media attention, but that are quietly making a difference now, and have opportunity for growth or expansion.
Dr. Steven Cohen is Executive Director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute and a Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He is also Director of the Master of Public Administration Program in Environmental Science and Policy at SIPA and Director of the Master of Science in Sustainability Management at Columbia’s School of Continuing Education. He is a consultant, former policy analyst, and former member of the Advisory Council on Environmental Policy and Technology for the U.S. EPA.
