A virtual gathering of sustainability professionals in the Greater DC area!
Join us for our first ISSP Greater Washington, DC Regional Learning Network meeting on May 1st at 12 pm ET. Since our chapter membership is so dispersed, we are having a virtual brown bag lunch to facilitate networking and learning specific to our area. If it goes well, this will be the first in a series.
The Topic: Local/Social Procurement
The "buy local" movement has been a hot and growing trend in recent years. Not only do local products and ingredients grab the attention of consumers, but it's an important factor in supporting local economies. Furthermore, when the "local" business is a social enterprise, the positive impact is compounded! For example, one study showed that for every dollar invested in a social enterprise, there was an estimated $4.13 in return to the community!
If it's such a great idea, why don't we do this more? In our Virtual Lunch and Learn, we'll hear from Dr. Aurora Dawn Reinke who has been writing and speaking on this topic. She'll give a 15-minute overview presentation and then open it up to the network for discussion. Come prepared to ask questions, share ideas, and solve problems. The call will be co-hosted by Mark Frieden, founder of Crossbow Strategies, a sustainaibility consulting company based in Alexandria, Virginia. Mark and Aurora are co-chairs of the ISSP Greater Washington, DC Chapter and volunteers in the new ISSP Ambassador Program.
Regional meetings are free for ISSP members! Make sure you're logged in to receive your automatic member discount.
Note: Those outside the mid-Atlantic are welcome to join us but since our conversation is about “buy local” we hope to feature challenges and opportunities specific to the DC/Maryland/Virginia region. If you are not based in this area and are interested in a Regional Meeting for your area, see the Regional Learning Networks page to learn about plans for other regional meetings and see how you can get involved!
Please note that this event will take place at noon Eastern Time (12:00pm ET). (The time listed below is in US Pacific Standard Time, ISSP's server time zone.)
