WEBINAR: Linking Executive Compensation to Sustainability & ESG Performance

Addressing sustainability issues is becoming more and more important for certain industries. Not only governments, but stock exchanges, major global investors, traditional banks, pension funds, and proxy advisors are all increasingly pressuring companies to improve their efforts in environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics. As a result, more and more companies are driving their sustainability agenda by integrating ESG criteria into their compensation systems and, in particular, in their executive compensation systems.

But how can such criteria be linked to compensation systems without over-complicating existing bonus plans? What could ESG criteria be used at what level and to what extent? And who should define and govern the sustainability agenda and the link to compensation?

We sat down with Claudia Wuerstle to discuss incorporating and incentivizing ESG performance through compensation.  We explore current market practices and discuss different ways to reflect ESG criteria in "variable pay", the portion of employee compensation that is based on performance.  We also guide you through a 7-step approach that structures the discussion around ESG in pay and discuss practical examples.

Claudia Wuerstle is a consultant at HCM International, Switzerland, a leading independent consultancy in the areas of compensation, value-based management, governance, risk, compliance, and management of regulatory matters.

Claudia is specialized in the areas of compensation, sustainability, and governance in both the financial and industrial sector. She holds a Master degree from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland and is a certified ISSP Sustainability Associate.
