WEBINAR RECORDING: Two Powerful Tools to Reduce Waste

Sustainability has the reputation of being 1) complex and 2) a niche topic.  Controllers don’t see how it helps their financial bottom line.  Except for recycling and turning off the lights, sustainability does not appear to be relevant to most organizations’ routine decisions.  What tools can organizations use so that sustainability will have broad-based impact on the organization?

Lean tools are powerful and easy to use. They have been effectively deployed in all functions inside organizations (sales, operations, accounting, etc.), and in all types of organizations (for-profit, not-for-profit, government, education, etc.)  These proven tools can be employed to successfully support sustainability objectives, such as reducing waste of all types.  And your controller will love you, because lower waste equals fatter financial bottom line!

Recorded live on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. PT / 2:00 p.m. ET

Join us for ISSP's live, interactive November webinar in which Gary Langenwalter will present 2 tools from the Lean toolbox and show how to use them to identify and eliminate waste, as part of your Triple Bottom Line initiatives (People, Planet, Profit/Performance).

  1. Value Stream Mapping.  A value stream map graphically identifies the most promising opportunities for sustainability improvement, such as waste which can then be eliminated.  It is easy to learn and easy to use – the only tools required are a pencil and legal pad.

  2. Fishbone and 5 Whys.  A fishbone diagram is a graphical structured way of determining root causes.  Coupled with the 5 Whys, it helps teams avoid the trap of solving a symptom while leaving the underlying root cause untouched.  Since the root cause is usually a management policy, these tools enable a team to show the waste that the policy is causing, thereby creating a compelling reason to change the policy.

Key takeaways from this webinar include how to use 2 Lean tools to achieve sustainable transformation:

  • Value Stream Mapping (VSM)
    • How to create a Value Stream Map, and
    • How to use VSM to reduce waste
  • Fishbone and 5 Whys.
    • Two ways to use a fishbone (structured and unstructured), and
    • How to use the 5 Whys to get to the root cause(s).
