Durban, South Africa has been one of Africa’s leading cities in pioneering exciting new long term planning processes. The lessons learned from its “Imagine Durban” planning process has been carefully documented in order to preserve the institutional memory of that city’s planning process, which since 2007 has inspired action in other African cities in Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia. Interestingly the experiences has also enthused planners and city practitioners working in the built environment in the global north. In this webinar, the story of Durban’s participatory long term planning process will be shared and key lessons highlighted with a view to inform other city’s journeys towards a more sustainable future.

PRESENTERS:

Sogen Moodley is a Senior Manager in the eThekwini Municipality, Durban, South Africa. He has managed the city’s strategic planning process for over ten years and has authored two publications that tells the story of and documents lessons learned in eThekwini’s long term sustainability planning process. He has presented numerous papers and led sessions on strategic planning and capacity enhancement in local government at various countries internationally including Ethiopia, Senegal, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Rabat, Mexico, Spain, Canada and the US. He is also a skilled facilitator who has run international strategic planning workshops on behalf of the Municipality and the United Cities and Local Governments. He is currently managing eThekwini Municipality’s Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE), the first institute of this kind set up on the continent.  Read more about MILE and Sogen.
